V.S. Achuthanandan, Kerala’s Iconic Communist Leader and Former Chief Minister, Passes Away at 101

V.S. Achuthanandan

Thiruvananthapuram, July 21, 2025 — Kerala’s political landscape mourns the end of an era as Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan, popularly known as V.S., passed away today at the age of 101. The veteran Communist leader and former Chief Minister of Kerala breathed his last at 3:20 PM at SUT Hospital, Pattom, following complications from a cardiac arrest suffered on June 23, 2025.

Achuthanandan’s passing marks the departure of one of India’s longest-living Marxist leaders, and a towering figure in Kerala politics, celebrated for his tireless advocacy for the working class and unwavering commitment to social justice.

A Life Forged in Struggle

Born on October 20, 1923, in Punnapra, Alappuzha, V.S. came from a humble, working-class background. Orphaned early in life and with limited access to formal education, he rose through the ranks of the Communist movement through sheer grit and determination.

A founding member of the CPI(M) in 1964, Achuthanandan was actively involved in the historic Punnapra-Vayalar uprising of 1946. His political life included over five years in prison and nearly four years living underground, a testament to his deep-rooted ideological commitment.

Tenure as Chief Minister: Reform and Resistance

Serving as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011, V.S. led with bold conviction. He spearheaded the Munnar eviction drive to reclaim encroached government land, initiated a strong crackdown on the lottery mafia, and promoted free and open-source software in the state’s education sector—making Kerala a national pioneer in digital inclusion.

His tenure also saw major infrastructure projects like the Vallarpadam transhipment terminal and early groundwork for the Kochi Metro, highlighting his balanced vision for both development and social equity.

A Relentless Voice of the People

Even outside power, V.S. remained a force to reckon with. As Leader of the Opposition for a record 15 years, he fearlessly took up causes ranging from environmental protection to gender equality and labor rights. Known for his sharp critiques and mass connect, he often found himself at odds with the party leadership, particularly with current Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, yet his popularity remained untouched.

In 2016, at the age of 93, he led the Left Democratic Front (LDF) campaign and won the Malampuzha constituency, proving once again his enduring influence.

Tributes from Across the Political Spectrum

Following his demise, tributes poured in nationwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences, recalling their interactions during their respective tenures as Chief Ministers. CPI(M) leaders Brinda Karat and Hannan Mollah hailed him as a “warrior for the poor” and a “pillar of the Communist movement.” Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan personally visited the hospital to pay their respects.

Final Journey and Everlasting Legacy

His mortal remains will be taken to the AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram for public homage before being transported to Alappuzha. The final rites will be conducted at the Valiya Chudukadu burial ground.

As Kerala bids farewell to V.S. Achuthanandan, it also salutes a leader who symbolized progressive politics, fearless integrity, and grassroots activism. His legacy will continue to inspire generations fighting for justice, equality, and the rights of the marginalized.
